Reasons Why Some Students Take To Cheating In Exams As Their Habit.

IN THIS POST I WILL LOOK INTO JAMB>>>
JAMB is an exam which is said to be a first step ahead for your
admission into the Tertiary institution after which you take your Post
Jamb if you have passed the Jamb with reasonable Marks.
But these days, the system has become corrupt because students no
longer read their books instead they depend on Expo which they are
expecting on that day of the exam.
But the question is that 'is the expo they are depending on correct?'
From my own perspective, my answer would be "Yes". Yes the answers
maybe correct because some how the questions gets to some people
earlier before the exam either through some corrupt Jamb officials or
through the process of delivery and printing. But at the same time the
answers may also be wrong (wrong source).
You may also ask why they don't get very high marks even as they have
seen the questions but the truth is that, it is someone that would
have to solve the questions and also there might be errors during the
course of sending the answers to the students or during the course of
the students shading the answers.
Below are the major reasons why most students cheat in JAMB EXAM:
They think that>>>
1. THE EXAM DURATION IS NOT ENOUGH (3hrs)
2. THE QUESTIONS ARE TOO DIFFICULT FOR THEIR STANDARD.
3. THEY CHEAT BECAUSE THEY FEEL CHEATED IF THEY DON'T CHEAT.
1. EXAM DURATION:
They exam duration would not be enough for an average student to
answer four subjects with a total of 250 questions in less than 3hrs
30mins. Then less take the Subject ENGLISH for example; you will need
to read and understand not less than 2 passages before you go ahead
and answer the questions and you are aware that to read and understand
a comprehension passage for some students is time consuming.
Now let's consider those going for Engineering courses, they most
definitely take ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, AND CHEMISTRY as their
subjects. Apart from English they would have to do some little and
mighty calculations in the rest three subjects and you know how long
it would take if you have to be extremely careful in order not to
attain errors. This problem would have been half solved if calculators
were allowed to at least help matters with regards calculation to save
time.
But the question is "is the time duration really not enough?" you
would find out at the conclusion of this discussion.
2. DIFFICULT QUESTIONS:
Some say the questions are very difficult that they are meant for 1st
and 2nd year students in the higher institutions/University. More than
five students told me that they were willing to write on their own but
when they saw the questions they were only able to attempt not more
than 20 questions in the subjects involving calculations and that is
no average out of 50 questions. What would you say about that? The
students then have to cheat i.e use the expo which they already had or
will request for which was not their original intention. Some don't
also believe in themselves because of some words of discouragement
from their fellow 'jambites' that they would have low marks. What they
don't know is that there is no crime in believing in ones self.
But the question is "are the questions really that difficult as
proposed?" we would soon find out.
3. THE FEEL CHEATED IF THEY DON'T CHEAT:
Some of the 'jambites' may not have the original intention of cheating
or using expo as the case maybe but when they see their fellow
students cheating they would be forced to do so as well because they
don't want to be left behind and also for the reason that those that
cheated maybe ahead of them in terms of marks. But that's if their
answers turn out to be correct.
Another reason is that people give them false impression that jamb is
meant for malpractice (expo) but I will disagree with that. Some of
their family members or friends who have wrote same exam, cheated and
passed would also advice them to take such criminal step.
Just imagine students who have exam to write who were supposed to
dedicate the few days to the exam for revising of what they have read
or probably reading would rather prefer to dedicate it to making
arranging for the answers and phones they use that day of the exam.
But remember mobile handsets were prohibited. Is the exam really worth
cheating?
GENERALLY:
From all the questions I asked in all those 3 reasons, I would only
give one answer to them. And my answer would be that these reasons are
not worth cheating for. Cheating is just a bad mindset. This is
because the students don't read their books anymore. Anyone or anybody
who reads, understands would be able to write those exams within
stipulated time, won't find them difficult to answer but may still
engage in malpractice because they don't believe in themselves (maybe
caused by no 3 reason). STUDENTS SHOULD READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is one secrete I would love to share with them. "The world is
growing very fast, we are in the Jet age whereby machines will tend to
do most of all works", "The world is now full of technologically" But
one thing is for certain that only intelligent, smart, clever and
educated people will tend to be the survivers in this new world of
ours. This is because they need this group of people (intelligent,
smart, clever and educated) to coordinate the building of these
machines and also to advance the world technologically. The truth is
that if these students fail to realize this earlier and starts reading
their books, am afraid they would fall in the long run and left
behind.
Some may think they would use money to buy their way from the higher
institution just to get their certificate, but what they don't know is
that the "CERTIFICATE IS JUST A MERE PAPER IF THE KNOWLEDGE IS NOT
THERE". They can only buy the paper but they can't buy the knowledge
and this is because knowledge comes from reading, studying, research
and putting of your knowledge into practice.
From my own religious view; one thing I see that makes people unable
to read and understand, read and forget or read and get bored is that
they don't put "GOD FIRST" . Always PRAY BEFORE YOU READ or even do
anything. That's also one of my secrete of success. If I read,
understand, pray to my God and write an exam, it's impossible for me
to fail that exam. NEVER!!
So from all these I would say there is no reason to cheat in exams
because they aren't worth it.
I had once fell into these category until I melt a friend who began to
put me through and told me the basic facts I need to know. An adage
says "WHO DON'T KNOW SOMETHING HASN'T EXPERIENCED IT" . Another says,
"EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER" , while the another also says, "A
WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE"
Also remember that Examination malpractice is a crime and it's
punishable by law according to Nigeria Constitution (attracts some
jail terms).
