Gbong Gwong Jos, Emir of Wase Booed

Jos — A simple peace-building meeting turned dramatic in Kuru near Jos yesterday when Berom women booed Gwong Gwom Jos Da Jacob Gyang Buba for saying women were part of the security problems in Plateau State by selling beer to youths. In a similar incident in Vwang village in Jos South where another peace-building meeting was held, the session turned rowdy when Emir of Wase Alhaji Muhammad Sambo Haruna addressed the gathering in a seated position, a development that was greeted with protest by youths who said the emir should stand up while delivering his address. As in the case of the women against the Gwong Gwom Jos,it took the intervention of security operatives and respected individuals to restore order to a charged atmosphere. The peace-building meetings came as a part of a sensitization tour which the Special Task Force (STF) started last week and would end today. The Gwong Gwom Jos provoked the women when he said women who came outin black to protest the killing of their youths were the ones operating all the unlicensed beer parlours within the community which were getting youths drunk and making them vulnerable. The women booed the paramount ruler in protest and the situation could have turned violent but for the initiative of a clergy, Rev Musa Kuvua, who spoke in Berom language to calm the angry women.
